What I’ve brought with me around the world has changed since I started, but the original kit is as follows:
Nikon D600/D610 – I started off with the D600, but had the typical sensor dust issue, so returned it and Nikon wonderfully replaced it with a brand new D610. You can get a new Z6 for a bit more and upgrade to a mirrorless kit with 4K and 120 fps video (plus a few more sweet features.)
Nikon Nikkor 50mm f1.4 – This was my go-to for everything. Again, I started with one camera and one lens, and this got me through shoots in Bali, Australia, Vietnam, Europe, and the States. Since mid-summer 2018, I switched over to a manual focus Voigtlander 40mm f2. Not nearly as fast as the Nikon, but it’s half the size, has an incredible image quality, and is a beauty to use. (Seems they’ve stopped selling the lens I have, but this one is similar.) If you have a Canon, you can use this one.
Extra EN-EL battery – Pretty self-explanatory
EN-EL15 USB Charger USB charger for EN-EL15 batteries – this this is awesome, and it goes great with the battery setup described here.
Peak Design Shoulder Strap – I love this company. I started off with this larger strap, but then decided to go with the less bulky camera “leash.”
Peak Design Backpack – This thing is EPIC! I spent hours (days/weeks) contemplating which bag to get…trying them all out, and this one was the winner. It’s been around the world with me once already, including on the back of motorcycle protecting my gear from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, Vietnam during some of the worst rain storms I’ve ever seen. Definitely still throw a rain cover or tarp over your stuff, but this thing is awesome! Check out the bag here.
